A major legal battle broke out when a surrogate mother and the biological parents disagreed over a severe medical diagnosis during a pregnancy. The couple had hired the surrogate to carry their baby, but a routine scan revealed that the fetus had a rare, life-threatening heart defect.

While the biological parents are currently caring for the recovering newborn, the surrogate and her lawyers are continuing to fight in court to try to win custody.The surrogate is not paying for the baby's medical costs because a judge ruled that the biological parents have full legal custody, making them responsible for all hospital bills.

The baby was diagnosed with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS), a severe birth defect where the left side of the heart is completely underdeveloped and unable to pump blood to the body. Without immediate medical intervention, this condition is 100% fatal within the first few days of a newborn's life. To survive, the baby must undergo a grueling series of three open-heart surgeries starting immediately after birth, which gives him about a 70% chance of reaching age five. However, this is not a permanent cure; even with successful operations, the child faces a lifetime of intensive medical trauma, a significantly shortened life expectancy, and the likely future need for a full heart transplant.

McKenna West denied the abortion primarily because her specialized background as a cardiac nurse taught her that the baby’s rare heart defect was treatable with surgery rather than being an automatic death sentence. Faced with the reality of her 20-week pregnancy, her personal conscience and moral beliefs overrode the surrogacy contract, as she felt she could not live with herself if she actively signed papers to end the child's life. Confident that the baby deserved a chance to survive, she even arranged for her own brother and sister-in-law to adopt the child before fleeing to Texas to ensure the pregnancy went to term.

However, these medical bills are a huge part of the fight. The biological parents are facing massive costs for the baby's complex heart surgeries, which is why they are suing the surrogate for over $100,000 for breaking their contract. The surrogacy contract included a strict pregnancy termination clause that gave the biological parents the sole right to request an abortion if the fetus was diagnosed with a severe medical condition. After the baby was diagnosed with a major heart defect, the parents invoked this clause and formally asked McKenna West to terminate the pregnancy. While West originally signed the document agreeing to these terms, she ultimately refused to abort the baby, which led the biological parents to sue her.

The biological parents did not exert physical or legal coercion to mandate an abortion, as a surrogate maintains absolute bodily autonomy over medical decisions under U.S. law. They pursued full legal and medical custody to ensure the infant would have immediate access to elite pediatric cardiothoracic specialists and to retain control over his long-term healthcare strategy, fully assuming their parental roles upon his delivery.

So I am in a fairly new relationship. For the past couple of months, every single time that we go out, my bf has been paying. I have been offering to pay or go half on the dates but my bf always is adamant about him paying. I wanted to do something nice for him because I am all about things being equal. So this past weekend, I asked if I could come over and make him dinner. He was excited and agreed.
When I came over, I didn’t realize that his roommate would be home. His roommate was in the living room playing video games with him when I walked in. Please be aware that his roommate is male (this is an important detail). When I walked in, I greeted the roommate and my bf and went straight to the kitchen.
Since his roommate was there I began to cook for all of us. Me, my boyfriend, and his roommate. When I was done, I brought my bf and his roommate a plate of food. His roommate complimented my cooking and said that it was very good. I smiled and thanked him. My bf gave me this mad look. I looked back at him confused.
When we were finished eating, my bf asked me to go to the room to talk. When we went to his room, he went off on me saying that I should not be cooking for another man and serving him a plate in his face. He said that it was disrespectful and came off as me trying to flirt with him. He said that I didn’t need to cook for his roommate that I was only supposed to cook for him.
I’m so confused because I personally always felt like it was very rude to eat in front of people and not offer them anything.
Since then he has been giving me the cold shoulder.

I just cannot figure out if I actually did something wrong here.

Drove 5 hours with my girlfriend because her family was having a big get together and she really wanted me there. A bunch of relatives were coming in, they were doing a huge dinner at the house, whole thing was supposed to be me properly spending time with everyone.

Then after we got there I found out her ex was staying at the house too. Apparently he's still really close with the family and nobody thought that was worth mentioning to me beforehand lol.

I tried not to make it weird but the whole vibe was awful. Her mum kept bringing up stories about when they were together, and my girlfriend and her ex would talk to each other here and there throughout the night. Nothing constant, but enough that I was definitely noticing it. Then at one point the two of them disappeared outside together for like 20 or 30 mins.

I asked her what was going on when she came back and she immediately got defensive. Said I was embarrassing her in front of her family and acting insecure. It turned into a pretty nasty argument and she told me if I was gonna be around in a bad mood and ruin it for everyone then I should just go.

So I did. Grabbed my stuff, left the house and got myself a hotel room.

She's been calling and texting me nonstop since I left but I haven't returned any of her calls or texts. I really don't even know what I would say right now.

So now I'm sitting alone with a dry burger, cold fries and some dry tasteless wings wondering how I became the problem here. Thinking about just hitting the road early tomorrow without telling anyone and letting her figure out how she's getting home.

Her nephew, Brian Seaver, revealed the news in an Aug. 25 Instagram video.

“My name is Brin Seaver, son of Cassie Parton, and I’m representing the Parton and Owens family today announcing the passing of my aunt, Dolly Rebecca Parton Dean, Sister, Sis and Granny to one generation and Gigi to the next,” he says in the video. “This video announcement is something Dolly asked of me years ago, before I fully absorbed it as a future reality. As her head of security for more than two decades, a role my father Larry held before me, I have imagined the heaviness of this moment but haven’t truly felt it until now.”

Seaver added: “It is an honor, an honor that is mixed with absolute pride and great sadness. But sadness lies with us, not with Dolly. Dolly has lived in the light and is in the arms of Jesus, surely met by Carl, her parents and countless others who have watched her and longed to meet her in the heavens.”

“Dolly opened doors not just for me but for her entire family to reach the potential we didn’t even know was possible. Dolly also opened doors for generations of singers, songwriters, musicians and dreamers from every walk of life and across every continent., Seaver added in the video message. “By her example, we believed that anything is possible. She never saw a door she couldn’t open, and the doors she opened made and changed history.

His statement continued: “My family and I have shared a lifetime of beautiful memories with Dolly, but so have you. She has always been on your television, your record player, your CD and on your phone playlist, becoming an extended part of your family whether you liked it or not. Our family and the team she has entrusted with her legacy will work diligently to ensure her spirit will live with us forever. Dolly was a farmer, just like her daddy; he farmed the soil, she farmed songs and happiness. Dolly called me and said she wants to rest in a beautiful bed of plush cotton because after a life of wearing heavy rhinestones, she finally deserves to be comfortable and have some rest.”

Seaver ended his statement, saying, “Rest in peace, Aunt Dolly — Aunt, Granny, Gigi. May God bless Dolly Parton, and may God bless you all. She will always love you.”

My neighbor and I have lived next to each other for 15 years. The redwood in my backyard corner was planted by the previous owner in 1987. It's 38 years old, healthy, and the reason my back patio is usable in August.

Eight months ago, my neighbor put a $21,000 solar array on his roof. Nice panels. He was proud of the 30% federal credit and showed me the app that tracks his production.

A few months after the installation, he leaned over the fence and mentioned that my tree "catches" his panels in the afternoon. I said something like "that's the sun's fault, not mine" and thought we were done.

Later, he brought his phone to my porch with the production graph pulled up. Between roughly 3:40 and 5:10 pm, November through February, my redwood's shadow crosses the lower left corner of his array. Ninety minutes a day, maybe 6% of his output. He had done the math and estimated it was costing him about $37 a month, around $444 a year, and said it affected his payback period.

A few weeks later, he sent me a certified letter with an actual removal estimate attached. He said he expected me to cover the $8,200 removal and stump grinding cost. The letter said if I preferred, "a remediation trim" was acceptable, and included a quote for $2,900.

A tree service he hired later looked at my tree and gave him their estimate. Then he texted that he'd "hate to escalate to small claims over a tree," but he'd documented everything, including his estimated lost production to date.

I spent $150 on my own arborist. She confirmed the redwood is healthy, that the $2,900 "remediation trim" would remove about a third of the canopy and could seriously damage the tree or shorten its lifespan, and that removing it would change the drainage in both our yards. She also mentioned that in many places, solar shade laws consider factors like whether the tree existed before the solar installation.

When I told my neighbor that, he said:

"Trees can wait. Solar can't. Your tree is costing me $37 of electricity every month, and I shouldn't have to finance your shade."

My wife thinks I should just pay for the trim. She says it's "a tree, not a family member," and my neighbor texts me production graphs at 7am now. Another neighbor suggested splitting the removal cost, because the tree "bothers him more than it benefits us" and we still live next to these people.

A) Pay for the trim (or split the removal). It's $2,900 to end this, and a redwood isn't worth a small claims war with someone whose entire identity is now a production app.

B) The tree stays. It was standing for 37 years before his panels existed. He bought a $21,000 system with a 38-year-old redwood in plain sight, and his payback math doesn't turn my backyard into his easement.
